Production systems

The crucial trinity

The bio-based economy’s production system can broadly be divided into three parts.

•    Biomass supply
First of all there is the need for biomass of course. This is the designation for all organic resources that can be used for producing bio-based products.

•    Processing through technology
Subsequently, these biomass flows are prepared and processed in different ways, to be converted into bio-based products and applications.

•    Products
After processing, the biomass intermediates or products can be used for many different purposes. Biomass can be transformed into fuel, energy or bio plastic. Its final destination mainly depends upon the quality and type of biomass. Wood waste for example is ideal to generate heat, but is unsuitable for obtaining medicine ore fine chemicals.
